What we offer
Portishead Pilot Gig Club offers a range of different rowing opportunities for our local community.
Rowing for fun, fitness and friendship. Social rowing is the best way to enjoy pilot gig rowing without committing to a crew for training. Even if you don’t row regularly, come along and join us for a BBQ on the beach instead!
There are several different categories of crew racing which are defined by age and gender. Crew racing involves committing to regular training sessions, often working towards a particular event or regatta. Regattas take place throughout the year, however the main racing runs from May to September.
There are other opportunities to row outside of the main racing season with the North Coast Gig League (NCGL) providing opportunities for clubs during the winter months at monthly events, often in the Appledore area. The spring/summer racing season kicks off with the Three Rivers Race in March at Saltash (Caradon Pilot Gig Club), in the run up to the World Pilot Gig Championships on the Isles of Scilly in early May. Throughout the summer, there are plenty of opportunities to race at club regattas around the west country and beyond.
The season finishes in September with the County Championships in Newquay – always a fantastic weekend of racing and club fun.
Crews are made up of single sex rowers and depending on numbers may include Ladies/Mens A,B or C crews, with some regattas holding a mixed sex “Barbarian” race at the end of the day which is always good fun!
Vets and Super Vets Crews
These crews are made up of of some of the fiercest rowers who are aged over 40 (vets) and over 50 (super vets) and above! Do not underestimate the vets and super vets, they have been racing a long time and are often more experienced and competitive than the open crew rowers!
Portishead Pilot Gig Club is extremely keen to ensure young people in Portishead have an opportunity to try gig rowing and we will be looking to develop a youth crew from May 2018. If you’re interested, please get in touch. Gig rowing requires strength, stamina and being a team player.
Throughout the calendar year, there are opportunities to take part in adventure rows such as The Great London River Race, rowing along the Thames in London with all types of other boats. Its often a fantastic adventure and one not to be missed.
